How do you find motivation to exercise when you just don’t feel like getting off your butt? I ask myself this question every now and then, and I have the feeling I’m not the only one. Here are some ideas from my friends who are serious about their workouts:
How you feel after a workout is an effective motivator. I always feel great after a good workout. It’s a high and a super adrenaline rush. And I let that motivate me the next time. I also know that I feel a little off during the day if I don’t get that high from my workout.
Time for you. While many people make time to take care of others (kids, spouse, other family, co-workers, boss), they don’t often make time to take care of themselves. Instead, make your “you” time a priority, and don’t miss that exercise appointment. Schedule it in your work day on your calendar. Set the alarm if you have need that extra push.
How you’re going to look is a major stimulus. Imagine a slimmer, fitter you. Now let that visualization drive you. Wanna look good in a smaller size? 12 pounds down is a new size.
Stress relief. Wound up after a long day at the office? Get out and work off that stress. It makes a world of difference. And a much nicer you…
Invest in more workout clothes. Having the right clothing doesn’t just remove a hurdle; it reinforces your identity as an exerciser and when exercising is an integral part of your identity, it isn’t optional anymore. It’s just part of your life. Plus, you’ve got to wear new workout clothes somewhere. I have exercise lollies (You know… very short shorts with a skirt around it) and no sleeve shirt that I know I would never wear except to the park every morning! But one day a girl who was about my size stopped me and said “You always look so cute out here. Where do you shop for exercise clothes?” I had no problem telling her Target and to catch the sale. HA!
Make friends with the regulars. There are a group of people I see every morning in the park. I have no idea their names but we wave and say good morning when we see each other. If one doesn’t come for a couple of days I start thinking about where “Red hat guy” is. If I saw these people outside of the park…I probably won’t know them! HA! Funny how you make a community just be showing up every day.
Again these are just suggestions, but you know you gotta do something! Time to get it moving.
Quote for the week: Don’t give up. Great things take time…
